The Importance Of An Ideal Domain Name For A Starter

If you are just starting out on the World Wide Web, getting the right domain name should be your top priority. The success of your website lies in getting a name that works with your business and no stone should be left unturned in achieving this. Domain names drive the internet because they are the first to be seen by potential visitors on search engines or other traffic sources before the actual visit to the websites. As a result of this, successful internet entrepreneurs do not play with the name they register for their websites.

The sale of some domain names at whooping sum indicates that they are very valuable. For example,, and were sold for $350,000, $172,500 and $164,100 respectively. I’m not encouraging you to close your bank account in order to register a name, after all domain name registration costs about $10 and you can even get it for free, but if you don’t choose right, you may not get the right result. It is important for you to register your business name as a domain name but as a starter and since top names may have been taken or expensive to buy, you can register an available domain and use it as a business name.

Furthermore, you must ensure that the domain name is not unnecessarily long. Internet users like names they can easily remember and if you properly carry out your research, you will discover that majority of successful websites have short names. You should keep to two to three words and if you will go beyond this limit, it shouldn’t be more than four words. Even though you are allowed to use up to 67 characters during registration, it is not compulsory for you to use all. The use of hyphens for two or more words is also not the best unless you don’t have any other choice. Potential visitors to your site will not like to include hyphens when typing your URL and this may lead to losing visitors to your competitors or even visitor apathy.

In addition, you can also consider other extensions if the .com extension of your name has been taken. You can register it in the .net, .info, .org or .biz extension but when promoting the name, you should not forget to add the extension. For example, if the name is ‘’, you should not promote ‘carlist’ because you will be diverting many visitors to ‘’. There are other new extensions that can be used in relation to your type of business. For example, we have .photography, .band, .club, .bank, .boutique, .church and so on. If a domain like ‘’ has been taken, you can register ‘’. You can also take advantage of country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) if you are involved in a local business. Examples of some of them are .us, .uk, .ng, .in, .za, .cn, .es, .de and so on. They vary in registration length/criteria, automatic renewal dates, constant charges and procedures for transfer. When local prospects see domain names with the right ccTLDs, they will be more willing to do business with you.
